Raising ₹5,000 by 10% a year projects to ₹16,87,163 in 10 years at a 12% assumed return, ₹5,25,468 more than keeping it flat.
- You put in₹9,56,245
- Growth₹7,30,918
- SIP in the last year₹11,790
- More than a flat SIP₹5,25,468
How this is worked out
- Each month: balance = (balance + SIP) × (1 + i), i = yearly return ÷ 12. The SIP rises by the step-up at the start of every year after the first.
- At 0% step-up this is exactly the SIP calculator.
Assumptions
- Returns are assumed constant; market-linked returns vary year to year.
- Tax on redemption is left out.
The formula
Each month: balance = (balance + SIP) × (1 + i); the SIP rises by the step-up at the start of each new year
- i: the monthly rate: the assumed yearly return ÷ 12
At a 0% step-up the result equals the SIP calculator.
A worked example
Starting at ₹5,000 a month and raising it 10% a year for 10 years at 12%, you put in ₹9,56,245 and it projects to ₹16,87,163.
Questions people ask
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP whose monthly amount rises by a set percentage every year, usually in line with a salary rise. Most fund houses let you set it up once, so the increase happens without a new form each year.
How much difference does a step-up make?
More than it looks: each raise is invested for the remaining years, so a 10% yearly step-up over ten years can add more than half again to a flat SIP's value at the same return. The calculator shows the gap for your figures.
What step-up percentage should I choose?
One your income can carry every year, often 5 to 10%. A raise you have to pause later helps less than a smaller one you keep.
