The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a popular tax-free, government-backed savings scheme in India. It has a mandatory 15-year lock-in period and interest is compounded annually. PPF falls under the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax category, meaning contributions, interest, and maturity amounts are completely tax-free.
How to Use: 1. Set your "Yearly investment" (PPF has a statutory limit of ₹1.5 lakh per financial year). 2. Input the government's current annual "Interest rate". 3. Specify the "Time period" in years (minimum 15 years, extendable in blocks of 5 years).
Understanding the Results: The "Maturity value" shows your final tax-free corpus. The breakdown compares your cumulative annual contributions against the compound interest. Use it to plan long-term, risk-free retirement wealth.
Each year: balance = (balance + yearly deposit) × (1 + r)
The calculator assumes each year’s deposit goes in at the start of the year and earns a full year of interest.
Depositing ₹1,50,000 at the start of each year for 15 years at 7.1% gives a tax-free maturity of about ₹40,68,209: ₹22,50,000 deposited and ₹18,18,209 of interest.
The calculator adds your yearly deposit at the start of each year and then applies a year of interest. In the account itself, interest is worked out monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month and credited once a year, so depositing before 5 April earns the most.
At least 500 rupees and at most 1.5 lakh rupees per financial year, in one go or in instalments.
The account matures after 15 full financial years and can be extended in blocks of five years. Partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh financial year, within limits.
PPF has EEE status: deposits qualify for the Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime, and both the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.
