How the retirement calculator works

This retirement calculator estimates the corpus you need on the day you retire to maintain your lifestyle. It accounts for inflation (which erodes purchasing power over time) and calculates the post-retirement corpus needed to sustain your monthly drawdowns.

How to Use: 1. Enter your "Monthly expense" in today's rupees. 2. Set your "Current age" and target "Retirement age". 3. Enter your expected "Life expectancy". 4. Specify the pre-retirement "Inflation" rate. 5. Set the expected rate of "Return after retirement" on your capital.

Understanding the Results: The calculator determines the total "Corpus needed at retirement" to sustain your expenses. It also projects your "First-year expense at retirement" in inflated terms, highlighting how inflation dramatically changes the cost of living over several decades.

The formula

Spending at retirement = today’s yearly spending × (1 + inflation)^(years to retirement)

Corpus = spending at retirement × [1 − ((1 + inflation) ÷ (1 + return))^(years in retirement)] ÷ real return

  • real return: (1 + return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1

The corpus pays a yearly amount that keeps rising with inflation, while the remainder keeps earning your post-retirement return.

A worked example

Spending ₹40,000 a month at 30, retiring at 60 and planning to 85, with 6% inflation and 8% returns after retirement, you would need about ₹5,45,45,977 on the day you retire. Your first year of retirement would cost about ₹2,29,740 a month.

Questions people ask

How much money do I need to retire?

The calculator takes your monthly spending today, inflates it to the year you retire, and works out the lump sum that can pay that spending, rising with inflation every year, until your life expectancy while the rest stays invested.

Why does inflation change the answer so much?

At 6% a year, prices roughly double every 12 years. A household spending 40,000 rupees a month today would need about 2.3 lakh rupees a month in 30 years to live the same way.

What return should I assume after retirement?

A cautious one. Most retirees hold lower-risk investments, and what keeps the corpus going is the return above inflation, not the headline return.
